The Friends of Jesmond Old Cemetery have been shortlisted in a national competition organised by Find My Past, in partnership with Heritage Open Days. The ‘Everyday History Heroes’ award celebrates the historic and cultural sites that champion the stories of ordinary people and we are just one of three sites in the North East that have been selected for the public vote – how exciting!!

Historian and broadcaster, David Olusoga OBE has described the Friends of Jesmond Old Cemetery as “being dedicated to making sure every one of the cemetery’s moving stories is told. With research, online archives and events, they explore the lives of the people buried within this historic Newcastle landmark, transforming names carved in stone into rich testimonies of everyday life.”

In our bid to be shortlisted, we said that “every gravestone in Jesmond Old Cemetery represents a life, a family and a stor that deserves to be remembered. Being shortlisted is a wonderful opportunity to shine a light on the people who shaped our city and ensure their histories continue to inspire future generations.”
